IDS Aerodrome Obstacles Charting System

The professional solution to collect, design and deliver ICAO Obstacle Charts type A, B

The Obstacles Charting System is a software package which provides an integrated environment to administrate aeronautical data, create and treat terrain information and design files and design aeronautical surfaces and tracks, taking into account terrain and obstructions. It is based on the Annex 4 and 14 requirements and is currently available within the FPDAM interactive environment. This package complies with Annex 15 structure, quality and numerical data requirements. Data integrity and CRC checks are applied throughout the process from survey to chart generation.


Design Environment Functionality


  • Storage and management of aeronautical, terrain and obstacle data in the FPDAM and Survey databases, according to Annex 15 requirements.
  • DGN File creator allows the creation of geo-referenced DGN files.
  • The Feature Manager and Obstacle Manager extract the aeronautical data, ATS geography and the obstacles from the FPDAM database and make them available during the surfaces and areas design as well as the obstacle penetration check phase.
  • The Surface Constructor provides the user an interface for the setting and archiving of parameters.
  • The Obstacle Penetration Checker identifies the penetrating natural and artificial obstacles and saves them in the database.
  • After some processing, the list of penetrating obstacles or the DGN file with the visible contours and terrain will be saved into the database to be available for chart production.
  • The Path Area Constructor (Annex 4) is used for surface construction and creating the penetrating obstacle list and terrain for Obstacle Chart Type A.

Charting Environment Functionality


  • The Layout Manager allows usage of a pre-created layout during the chart drafting and analysis phase. During chart production it also allows the setting of some layout usage attributes and provides an interactive environment to create a user-defined obstacle chart layout to be applied.
  • The Chart Manager is an integrated multi-application environment that provides the functionality to produce the Obstacle charts. It consists of 4 applications:
  • The Chart Production Manager collects user inputs of aerodromes and runways for the chart design and inputs regarding the parameters to apply to the chart. It also Archives the chart-specific information for later use and also maintains the chart versioning. Finally, it invokes the chart building process and passes the information and drawing instructions to it.
  • The Chart Builder is responsible for drawing obstacle charts using the information passed to it by the Chart Production Manager
  • The Chart Refiner provides functionality for final user refinements (e.g. attaching reference files, clipping, printing etc)
  • The Chart Browser allows the user to view previously created obstacle charts by filters or queries
